What to Check
Check level in the overflow tank. Color should be the manufacturer spec (green, orange, pink depending). Check for oil sheens, rust, or debris. Test freeze point and pH with refractometer or test strips.
What to Say to the Customer
"Coolant is where it needs to be — correct level, good color, freeze protection is solid down to [X] below zero. We're in good shape for the season."
Upsell Trigger
If coolant is over 3 years old or color is off: "Your coolant is getting tired — most manufacturers call for a flush every 2–3 years. The additives that protect your system from corrosion break down over time. This is preventive, not emergency, but it's worth scheduling."
Common Missed
Thermostat housing leaks at the gasket. Common on domestic V engines. Look for coolant seeping at the housing seam during a hot run — it's often missed on a cold inspection.
